The Three Main Credit Bureaus

Contacting the Credit Bureaus

At some point in your financial history, it may be advantageous for you to contact the credit bureaus. Though these organizations are large and have many procedural guidelines, it is possible to positively impact your credit rating and credit score by contacting credit bureaus.

What Are Credit Bureaus?

The three major credit bureaus are Equifax, Experian, and Transunion. These agencies use FICO scores to produce your credit report and their proprietary credit score. The credit information these bureaus produce is used by many credit providers to determine if you will qualify for their product.

Obtain Your Credit Report

Before you contact the credit bureaus, you should obtain a copy of your credit report. You can do this through AnnualCreditReport.com (a free service), one of the credit bureaus, or through a credit report tracking service. You should be aware that each bureau computes your credit report in a slightly different way.

Once you review your credit report, you will be aware of any errors or inconsistencies you wish to dispute.

Why Should I Contact Credit Bureaus?

By contacting credit bureaus, you have an opportunity to rectify any mistakes or clarify any reports. Though it can be difficult to reach a person, in some cases it may be worth the wait.
