Splitting Up Charges

5 November 2009

Michaelceci provides a cautionary tale:

I just watched someone split a $600 dollar purchase across 4 different credit cards. Cut them up now.

Should you split charges across cards? And if not, then why?

Obviously, there are a few cases where you may want or need to split charges across different credit cards. If you are making an exceptionally large purchase, you may not have high enough a credit limit to pay for it with just one card. In addition, if you believe you will be declined for using just one card, splitting the charges might make sense.

However, if you do have to split charges, you should consider changing your spending habits. There are a few reasons that splitting charges is less than ideal. First, you are obviously spending in excess of your expectations, which may make it difficult for you to pay off your debt. Second, your credit score is partly determined by the amount of available credit you use. If you are using all your credit, your credit score will suffer. Finally, splitting charges can make your personal accounting more difficult.

We all have times when charges become difficult to manage. However, you should be careful before splitting charges between cards. It may indicate poor financial planning and a need to change your habits in the future.
